Good Shepherd Badge
Christ depicted as a shepherd is one of the oldest ways of depicting Christ. Originating in Ancient Greece, Hermes the ram bearer became a symbol of sacrifice. In the Bible, references to Christ as a shepherd include psalm 23, the parable of the sheep, and many others. Early Christians used this symbol s a way to secretly align themselves with Christ, without going detected because the sheep bearer was also a pagan symbol of Hermes. Pastoral imagery and explicit references to sheep are scattered throughout the Old Testament as well.
This painting is a sized up copy of a badge in my personal collection. The mystical spirit of the badge is palpable. Christ drags his cross on the hazy horizon with a crown of thorns, while a sheep lays next to a stream. The spiritual forest features crossed trees on either side of Jesus with vines hanging. The original Mexican badge is probably from the early 19th century.
The badge can be sewn or pinned onto any garment. It can also be hung on a wall or by itself or framed. It is made with oil paint on a hand cut copper plate.
