This locket is a gorgeous example of aesthetic period design. The 19th century tended to reuse and over ornament in older European styles, up until the Aesthetic period which marked the beginning of a new movement. This was due in part to the rise of Japonisme, and partially as a rejection of mass produced and conservative adornments. This locket features an engraved collage of stork on a Japanese fan, foliage, and a swallow. This large locket is something you could wear on a short or long necklace.
