Baby Bacchus Lavalier

$2,700.00

No god fits this ornament better than Bacchus, the god of wine and pleasure. The lavalier is enameled “en ronde bosse,” a technique where an entire object is enameled on all sides, in this case, the enamel is applied over solid 18k gold. Bacchus is rendered in opaque white enamel, with his golden hair left bare. His hand brings a cluster of grapes close to his mouth, as he precariously sits on Renaissance style twisted foliage, reminiscent of grotesque frescoes. The foliage is enameled with translucent green, blue and muted orange and attached to the bottom are two dangly pearls, and a small diamond encased in a gold setting. The two chains that support the pendant are made comprised of two deep blue sapphires and two pearls. The bale is also enameled in a beautiful shade of aqua and is large enough to fit a larger chain or ribbon.

This renaissance revival lavalier was made in Italy during the late 19th century.
