A multi year battle between "a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars" and the dragon devil is the climax of the Book of Revelation. The woman is sometimes interpreted as Mary, the Church, or Israel, and in this version there’s a strong association with the Virgin mother. Even the European flag is directly inspired by the twelve star halo featured on the woman of the apocalypse.
